The 1st test between India and New Zealand at Kanpur ended in a draw yesterday, with the match going down to the wire. At the end, India failed to remove the last pair at crease – Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel, with the former playing a defiant innings of 18 of 91 balls and saving the test match for his side.

On the last day, India needed to pick 9 wickets to seal the match, but were kept at bay by the overnight pair of Tom Latham and night watchman, William Sommerville. It was Umesh Yadav, who broke this partnership at the score of 79.

The next wicket fell at the score of 118, the victim being Latham (52). Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson went back to the pavilion in quick succession, giving India hopes of wrapping up the test match quickly.

However, the tail wagged for New Zealand and they were able to save the test match. The deteriorating light, which was a case in almost on all five days, went in favor of the Kiwis as well.

The Player of the Match award went to the debutant Shreyas Iyer, who scored a century in the first and a half century in the second innings of the test – the first Indian batsmen to do so.
