Dina Boluarte, Peru’s first female president, has taken office. Her swearing-in ceremony coincided with a day-long political drama that saw her predecessor arrested by police and impeached by lawmakers. As Peru’s sixth president in less than five years, Boluarte, the nation’s previous vice president, was sworn into office.
The vote to remove President Pedro Castillo from office was carried by 101 of the 130 lawmakers present at the ceremony. In advance of an impending impeachment vote by parliamentarians, then-President Castillo announced preparations to dissolve Congress and appoint an emergency administration at the start of the day.
