On Sunday morning, an earthquake with a 7.6 magnitude occurred in Papua New Guinea, which is situated on the eastern part of the island of New Guinea, east of Indonesia, and north of eastern Australia. According to a statement from the US Geological Survey, the 90-kilometer-deep earthquake occurred close to the town of Kainantu.
Papua New Guinea and Indonesia’s shores may experience dangerous tsunami waves within 1,000 kilometres, according to the US National Tsunami Warning Center, however the threat has already dissipated.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 that struck the country’s central area in 2018 killed at least 125 people.
