Bangalore is the country’s most linguistically diverse region,
with 107 planned and unscheduled languages spoken, a recent analysis based on
2011 census data shows.
Pune is ranked second with over 100 languages spoken in the county. It is
reported by the Deccan Herald.
Bangalore’s linguistic wealth can be attributed to its status as an information technology center, a thriving economy and a tolerant culture that attracts a diverse crowd from across the country for work, business and education.
“Diversity Research” is the first step towards a larger 10-year study of
population migration and mobility (2011-2021), ”said Dr. Audit Kapoor,
Associate Professor of Economics at the Institute of Statistics of India,
Delhi, who produced the data.
“There are 121 scheduled and non-scheduled languages in India. We wanted to determine where these languages are spoken. We also wanted to see where people are moving to. What makes Bengaluru stand out is that the data clearly shows that much of the country is not linguistically or culturally diverse. In the south alone, data shows that Kerala is not very diverse and neither is Tamil Nadu, barring Kanchipuram and Chennai,” Dr Kapoor told The Deccan Herald.
In Bangalore, also known as Minimeter, Kannada remains the
most dominant language, with over 44% of the population spoken. Other popular
languages in the capital city of Karnataka are Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi,
Maithili, Odiya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kashmir, Sindhi, Urdu, Konkani,
Santali, Manipuri, and Nepali.
Unscheduled languages include English, Kabuli, Pashto, Tibetan, Arabic,
Nishi, Mundari, Lushai, Nicobar, Sherpa, Nagaland and others.
