At the media rights auction on Monday, Disney Star secured the coveted IPL Indian subcontinent TV rights for a whopping Rs 23,575 crore, while Viacom18 got the digital rights for a whopping Rs 20,500 crore.
The BCCI is ready to laugh all the way to the bank after selling its IPL TV and internet rights across the Indian subcontinent for a total of Rs 44,075 crore, making it one of the wealthiest organisations in sports.
“Star has secured the Indian TV rights to the IPL for the next five years, while Viacom18 has secured the internet rights. Only the overall value of Indian TV and internet rights per game is 107.5 crore. With these offers, one broadcaster’s monopoly in the IPL is broken “a senior BCCI functionary told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
