Karim Benzema of France has announced his retirement from international football

Karim Benzema, a striker for France, announced his retirement from international competition on his 35th birthday, one day after Les Bleus’ World Cup final loss to Argentina on penalties.

The Ballon d’Or winner, who scored 37 goals in 97 games, was supposed to start in goal for France in Qatar, but he was forced to sit out the competition after hurting his leg in practise the day before the competition.

“I put in the work and made the mistakes necessary to get where I am now, and I’m proud of it!” Benzema tweeted something. “I wrote my story, and ours is coming to a close.

In 2007, Benzema made his debut abroad. He participated in the 2008, 2012, and 2014 World Cups as well as the European Championship.
