After Lionel Messi and his family travelled to Saudi Arabia without authorization as part of a promotional commercial agreement, Paris Saint-Germain suspended Messi and fined the Argentina international. Since his contract is expected to expire this summer without being renewed, he now appears destined to leave the team. The suspension’s duration was not made clear, although two weeks was what the French media reported.
The 35-year-old was absent when his colleagues trained on Monday after the rest period was cancelled as a result of the French champions’ weekend 3-1 home loss to Lorient. He was not given time off as a result.
On top of a sizable punishment for travelling thousands of miles without prior notice, Messi will miss all Ligue 1 games for a two-week period starting on May 2. He also won’t be allowed to train with the team.
