Tokyo Olympics reports eight case of volunteer testing positive for COVID-19

Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics confirmed on Tuesday that a foreign athlete tested positive for Covid19 in the Olympic Athlete’s Village.
According to Kyodo News, eight other people involved in the Tokyo Olympics also tested positive for the coronavirus.

An American gymnast previously tested positive for COVID19 in a training camp before the Tokyo Olympics. According to Kyodo News, the athlete was training in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture before the Tokyo Olympics. The name of the athlete has not been announced, but it is reported that he is a teenager. In the early hours of Monday before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Czech volleyball player Ondrej Perušić tested positive for COVID19. He is currently asymptomatic and is quarantined in accordance with regulations.

This is the second case of the Czech team after the contingent arrived at the airport and found that an officer’s COVID (test) was positive. Eight members of the British Olympic team were quarantined on Sunday after coming into contact with a person infected with COVID19 on a flight to the Tokyo Olympics. According to Sky News, before flying to Tokyo and upon arrival, all six athletes and two companions tested negative, but they have now been identified as close contacts of the infected person who flew with them.

However, the British Olympic Association stated that a participant who tested positive for COVID19 was not a member of the British national team. Three members of the South African U23 men’s football team also tested positive for COVID19 and are currently in quarantine at the Tokyo 2020 facility. The three members of who tested positive for COVID19 were Tabiso Monyane (player), Kamochelo Mahlatsi (player), and Video analyst Mario Martha. The three men tested positive in the final round of daily sputum (saliva) tests.
