On Monday, the Central Government issued detailed guidelines for mass COVID-19 vaccination drive in India. As per the guidelines approximately 30 crore people will be vaccinated in the 1st phase. The drive will be initiated once the emergency use of vaccine is approved the the Health Ministry.
Bharat Biotech, Serum Institute of India and Pfizer have applied for approval on supplying their vaccines in the Indian market. The guidelines document mention that the vaccines will be administered to COVID frontline workers, health workers and citizens above the age 50 years in the first phase. In the next, people under the age of 50 with associated comorbidities, and rest of the population in the final phase will be administered. The entire vaccination process will be carried out by 20 ministries.
To complete the entire process, a digitalised platform – COVID Vaccine Intelligence Network (Co-WIN) will be implemented to track enlisted beneficiaries for vaccination on a real-time basis. Only pre-registered candidates will be vaccinated that too only on priority basis.
