In a money laundering case related to a now-repeated liquor policy, a Delhi court on Monday placed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in judicial detention until April 15, less than three weeks before the nation starts voting in the Lok Sabha elections.

When Kejriwal’s detention from the Enforcement Directorate ended, he was brought before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja.

The investigating agency requested 15 days of judicial custody for Kejriwal and informed the court that they may want further detention at a later date.

Sunita Kejriwal, Kejriwal’s wife, and AAP ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj were present at court.

“This court directs respondent number 2 (ED) to bring its comments to the notice of the said judge who is directed to pass appropriate orders in accordance with the law. It is clarified that this court has not commented on the locus standi of the petition and the same is left open,” the court said in its order.

In response to the court’s order, AAP leader Dilip Pandey said, “Arvind Kejriwal has been sent to judicial custody and it was not opposed by ED, it shows that interrogation was not the purpose. The purpose was to arrest Arvind Kejriwal just before the Lok Sabha elections and break the INDIA alliance. The entire country is watching how Delhi Police, ED, CBI, and IT are all working on the instructions of BJP. ”
