Alstom India spoke to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and Megha Engineering, the only two candidates to operate private trains in the tenders launched by the Ministry of Railways. According to Alain Spohr, Managing Director of Alstom India, discussions also took place with another player who did not make an offer.
“We have decided to support the operation of private trains as a partner if the opportunity arises. We are offering a special train based on the HighSpeed technology used in France,” Spohr told Business Standard.
Spohr said the proposed train is based on the TGV, a high-speed train that runs throughout France. TGV stands for High-Speed Train (translated simply by high-speed train in English). A certain type of TGV, called the V150, holds the world record for the highest speed on any national rail system. The current world speed record for a steel-wheeled commercial train held by the French TGV is 574.8 kilometers per hour. This record has been in effect since April 2007.
“We have developed a local solution corresponding to the speed segment in India … We have also started discussing with Indian Railways if they are interested in adding it to their long-distance train (over 1000 kilometers) High-speed trains. They said they would like more information about the train and we are about to start a discussion with them, “Spohr said.
