In an apparent first-of-its-kind move, local authorities have requested payment from the Archaeological Survey of India for a water tax of more than Rs 1 crore, a property tax of approximately Rs 1.5 lakh for the Taj Mahal, as well as a Rs 5 crore service tax for the Agra Fort.
The ASI in Agra claimed that the monuments were free from these charges, but Municipal Commissioner Nikhil Tikaram Funde claimed that various buildings had received notices and that those who were qualified would receive the exemption.
In the warnings issued by the Agra Municipal Corporation, the ASI is required to pay 1.94 crore rupees in water taxes, 1.47 lakh rupees in property taxes for the Taj Mahal, and 1.40 lakh rupees in property taxes for Itmad-ud-tomb.
The ASI has been notified that payment is due for the fiscal years 2021–2022 and 2022–2023, and it has 15 days to comply.
