On Monday, the Bombay High Court denied to accept the Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami’s plea for bail, who is under arrest for allegedly abetting a suicide in May 2018 and was advised to go to Lower Court to seek bail.
“No case was made out in present matter for the High Court to exercise its extraordinary jurisdiction”, said Justice S S Shinde and Justice M S Karnik (a two-member division bench).
On November 4th, along with him two other people – Feroze Shaikh and Neetish Sarda – were arrested by Alibaug Police in connection with the suicide case of architect and interior designer, Anvay Naik. A suicide note said to be written by Naik claims that his dues were not paid by Goswami, Shaikh and Sarda for his work done at Republic TV studio. Earlier in 2019, this suicide case was closed by the police; however, it was reopened after insistence from Naik’s wife Akshata in court. Re-investigation into the case was ordered in September 2020 by Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.
The High Court refused to grant the bail to all the three accused and advised them to approach the Lower Court for their bail appeal. On Sunday morning, Goswami was shifted to Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai as allegedly he was discovered using mobile phone by the police.
