The Union Cabinet clears Bill raising lawful marriage age for ladies from 18 – 21. With Cabinet gesture now through, the public authority will acquaint a revision with the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 and hence carry changes to the Special Marriage Act and individual laws, for example, the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, etc.
The Bill was proposed dependent on suggestions put together by the Jaya Jaitly-headed team of the Center to Niti Aayog in December last year. The team was established to analyze “matters relating to age ofmotherhood, goals of bringing down MMR(Maternal Mortality Rate) and improvement of dietary levels and related issues.
Area 5(ii) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 sets least age for lady to be 18 and 21 for that of the husband to be.
