Cyclone Yaas is likely to hit West Bengal and Odisha Coast

According to the India Meteorological Office (IMD), Cyclone ‘Yaas’ is expected to cross West Bengal and north Odisha coasts by May 26 evening with the wind speed extending 155- 165 kmph blasting to 185 kmph.

Considering Cyclone Yaas, upwards of 18 groups of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been conveyed in Odisha.

Seven groups have been conveyed in Balasore, 4 in Bhadrak, 2 in Jajpur, 3 in Kendrapada, one each in Jagatsinghpur and Mayurbhanj. Four groups have been kept as save, according to the NDRF.

The Indian Air Force tweeted, “#CycloneYaas Airlift of 21T of #HADR eqpt & 334 personnel of @NDRFHQ by 5xC-130 aircraft from Patna & Varanasi to Kolkata and Arakkonam to Port Blair is currently underway. #IAF has airlifted 606 personnel and 57T load of NDRF since 21 May, to mitigate the cyclone effect.”

As per the Odisha government, 66 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) groups and 177 fire administrations groups are being conveyed in territories that are probably going to be influenced by the tornado.

The Indian Air Force has transported 21 tons of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief gear, alongside 334 NDRF faculty on Sunday. To alleviate the impact of the twister, the IAF has carried 606 faculty and 57 tons heap of NDRF so far since 21 May.

The Deputy Director of IMD Bhubaneswar informed that Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur,  Bhadrak, Balasore, Cuttack, Khordha, and Puri are expected to receive heavy to heavy rainfall on May 25.

He further added, “On May 26, we are expecting extremely heavy rainfall at Mayurbhanj and Balasore.”

The IMD had earlier predicted that the cyclonic storm Yaas will hit the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal on May 26 and both the states will experience heavy rainfall from May 22 to 26.

“PM Modi also instructed all concerned departments to ensure timely evacuation of those involved in off-shore activities. He spoke about the need to ensure that time duration of outages of power supply and communication network are minimum and are restored swiftly,” the PMO said in a statement after a review meeting.
