India and Russia extend military cooperation, sign deal for AK-203 rifle

On Monday, Defence minister Rajnath Singh met Russian defence minister Sergey Shoigu to extend both countries’ military technology cooperation till 2031. In addition, another major agreement was made under which both countries will manufacture almost 6 lakh AK-203 rifles – the deal is estimated to be worth Rs. 5000 crore.

Tweeting on this agreement, Rajnath Singh said, “productive, fruitful and substantial bilateral discussions on defence cooperation” and that “India values its special and privileged strategic partnership with Russia”.

In another tweet, he said, “India deeply appreciates Russia’s strong support for India. We hope that our cooperation will bring peace, prosperity and stability to the entire region.”

It is expected that India and Russia will sign ten agreements in the areas of including oil and space, rifles, helicopters and defence logistics.

PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to holds talks on Monday evening.
