India has secured International Blue Flag Certification for eight of its beaches. The Blue Flag Certification is a global recognition, which is based on 33 stringent criteria. This certification is an indicator of India’s conservation and sustainable development efforts. The eight beaches selected for this honour are Ghoghla (Diu), Kappad (Kerala), Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh), Shivrajpur (Gujarat), Golden (Odisha), Radhanagar (Andaman & Nicobar Islands) and Kasarkod and Padubidri (Karnataka).
Today, Prakash Javadekar, Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change virtually hoisted the international blue flags at these eight beaches. The flag hoisting was also done physically by senior officials and state ministers of the respective state and Union Territories.
Speaking about this certification, he congratulated and lauded the efforts of the Centre and the State governments in maintained these beaches and keeping them neat and clean, which tells that the coastal environment of the country is in good health.
He further added that his ministry has planned the Blue Flag certification for more than 100 beaches across the country in the next 3-4 years. He stressed on the fact that keeping the beaches clean will mean that less marine litter and environment sustainability, which in turn will add to the aesthetic value of the beaches and help in tourism growth.
