On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurates India’s first underwater metro station in Kolkata.
The 4.8-kilometer tunnel that connects Howrah Maidan and Esplanade has a 1.2-kilometer portion that is 30 meters below the Hooghly River, making it the first transportation tunnel in the nation to cross a major river.
Along with schoolchildren, PM Modi rode the metro from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan following the opening program. Schoolchildren have expressed joy at traveling alongside Prime Minister Modi in India’s first underwater metro service prior to the opening.
