Indian Railways will henceforth fine passengers who carry luggage that exceeds the allowed limit. If you are discovered carrying additional luggage without booking it, you will now have to pay six times the standard prices.
The minimal baggage fee is Rs 30.
The baggage costs on Indian Railways are set based on the carriage you are travelling in. If you fly in AC first class, you may bring up to 70 kg of luggage; in AC second class, you can bring up to 50 kg; and in AC third class, you can bring up to 40 kg. The restriction for the sleeper class is 40 kilogrammes, while the limit for the second class is 35 kg.
Luggage travelling on the same train as the owner must be submitted at the luggage office at the booking station at least 30 minutes before departure. Passengers can also reserve their luggage while purchasing their tickets.
If unbooked or partially booked luggage is discovered that exceeds the free allotment but falls within the marginal allowance, it is charged at 1.5 times the luggage scale rate.
