Rajiv Kumar, the current Election Commissioner, will begin his stint as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India from May 15, announced the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on Thursday. Kumar will be replacing the outgoing CEC Sushil Chandra.
In a statement, Kiren Rijiju, Union Law Minister said, “In pursuance of clause (2) of Article 324 of the Constitution, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Rajiv Kumar as the Chief Election Commissioner with effect from the 15th May, 2022. My best wishes to Shri Rajiv Kumar.”
Rajiv Kumar, an ex-IAS officer, superannuated from his services in February 2020. Thereafter, he was appointed as the Chairman of Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) in April 2020. Later, in September 2020, he assumed charge as the Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
In addition, Kumar has been associated with Central Board of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), NABARD, SBI, Economic Intelligence Council (EIC) and many more committees and boards.
