SpaceX and the American telecommunications company T-Mobile have announced that they will begin developing satellite connectivity for smartphones. Google recently announced that beginning with Android 14, this will be a feature available to all devices, provided they have the satellite connectivity partnerships in place.
The Android team is currently “designing for satellites,” and this support is planned for the “next version of Android,” which Google has confirmed as Android 14. That operating system should be available in mid-to-late 2023.
Satellite connectivity on phones is primarily intended for use in emergency situations and to eliminate cellular dead zones. Text messaging, MMS, and a few popular messaging apps will be supported by T-Mobile.
