In a press meet held today, Chhend Police informed about the arrest of a gang that was operating an online fraud company in the Uditnagar area of Rourkela. This eight-member team was duping people by sending them fake scratch cards worth lakhs of different companies, namely Naptol, Shudhi Ayurvedi, Thor of Hammer, Shopclues, etc. and extracting money in the name of GST charges.
The gang used to collect personal data of different customers, shopping on various e-commerce websites. They used to send fake application forms along with a scratch coupon card to these customers. Once people sent them back the filled up application form and scratch card details, they would pose as customer care executives and call them up convincing them that they have won rewards worth 8 lakhs to 25 lakhs. The only condition to receive this huge amount was payment of 1 to 2% GST on the reward money.
Police reported that this gang has been able to trap a few innocent people through this scam. The Chhend Police, along with other police teams, conducted a joint raid and arrested these eight persons, and seized 50 to 55 mobile phones with fake SIM cards, 4 laptops and 3 color printers and Rs. 60,000 cash along with other items from them.
